Description

This two-storey brick building designed by architect W.T. Whiteway was commissioned by successful businessman and community leader Yip Sang. From the 1930s to 1990s, this was home to the “Chinese Times”, an important source for local and Chinese political news, managed by the Chinese Freemasons. The printing presses could be viewed through the ground floor windows, and men gathered to read the paper pasted to the Carrall Street wall. When the newspaper moved in a mezzanine floor was added to accommodate the typesetters who used the 5,000 different Chinese characters to create each edition. Since the typesetters sat all day the ceiling is only six feet high.
