Description
his inspiring Gothic Revival church opened on May 26, 1933, built entirely of materials from British Columbia. The architects were Robert P. Twizell & George S.
Twizell. Twizzell and Twizell operated in Vancouver from 1908-1954 and became synonymous with quality institutional and residential designs.
The church stands as a testament to the faith of its two founding congregations—Wesley Methodist, formerly located at the southwest corner of Georgia and Burrard, and St. Andrew’s Presbyterian, formerly at the northeast corner of Georgia and Richards. The two churches united, along with the Congregational Church, when their fellow congregations across Canada came together in 1925 to form The United Church of Canada.
The church features 27 stained glass and 9 etched glass windows, and two organs. excellent acoustics make it a popular performance venue. Major restoration work is planned so the church can continue to serve the local and wider Vancouver community for years to come.
St. Andrew’s Wesley United Church was a stop on Vancouver Heritage Foundation’s 2018 West End Heritage Tour.
