Description
In 1910 J.L. McKenzie completed this “Edwardian Builder” house with its elegantly columned front porch. He built the neighbouring house on Odlum Drive earlier that year, along with 1028 and 1036 Odlum in 1908 and 1909 respectively. It was the most expensive of the four, costing $3,000 to construct.
The house was rented through the 1920s and 1930s when it was home to many working-class families. For several years in the midst of the Depression, it remained vacant.
From 1940 through to the late 1980s, it was home to a variety of immigrants: Yugoslav, Estonian, and then Italian. By 1999, the house had fallen into serious disrepair.
The current owner has painstakingly restored the house and its many historic features including original art glass windows, intricate wood mouldings, fir floors and interior doors. The oak fireplace mantel was discovered under the deck, resulting in the unusual front driveways. The house received a VHF’s True Colours Grant in 2007.
