Description

The Robertson Memorial Presbyterian Church was constructed in 1908 when the Presbytery of New Westminster decided to build a new church in the area.

The building, entirely of wood construction, was built by the BC Mills Company in prefabricated panels. The panels where joined by a unique fastening system. The panels were likely constructed in a factory at the foot of Victoria Drive and delivered to the site where they were assembled. Robertson Memorial is last known BC Mills church in Vancouver and is valued for this and for its representation of the evolution of the local timber construction industry.

Features of the church include its modular structure and expression, surviving wood siding, wood details, and simple steep pitched roof form with heavy timber trusses. Although the windows were replaced in the 1980s, the openings are original.
From 1977 until recently, the Fijian Hindu community operated the church as “Shiv Mandir”.
