Description
In 2008, a new sewage pumping station in Gastown replaced an adjacent 35-year-old pumping station that had reached the end of its useful service life. The pumping station is a two-storey concrete structure that doesn’t look out of place in the surrounding historic area. In 2009, the Columbia Street Pump Station won an award of merit for Engineering Excellence.
The sewage pumping station safeguards the environment and public health, and also includes story telling and art that celebrates a historic neighbourhood in the City of Vancouver.
Each of the three windows facing Alexander Street represents a different time period: the past, the present, and the future. The new Columbia Street Pump Station is equipped with large pumps that can handle the increasing quantity of sewage as the population grows.
