Description

Notable for both its architecture and its history, this 1897 Queen Anne style house was the home of Ewing Buchanan. While residing here, Buchanan wrote lyrics to ‘O Canada’ that were first performed at the Vancouver Club on February 9, 1910. Numerous versions of ‘O Canada’ were penned in the early twentieth century, however Buchanan’s version with reference to ‘King’ and ‘Empire’ remained popular until the Diamond Jubilee of Confederation of 1927.

The house features three front-facing gables, a wrap-around verandah, and granite foundation. Restoration began in 1993 by the owners, James Britten and Michael Browne. Three years later the building was designated as a protected heritage property.
