Description
This 1903 one-storey house is located between Glen Drive and Vernon Drive, and is a good example of the Early Cottage House style. The house is characterized by its hipped roof, a symmetrical facade with a porch, bay windows, and vertical clapboard siding. On the front side of the house, four posts support the small roof that covers the porch. It has been predominantly occupied by working class residents.
The original address of the house was 1163 East Pender Street, until a new house was built on Lot 21 in 1920, which then became 1163. The house’s first owners were merchant Samuel Brown and his wife. Master Mariner Daniel Donald lived at the Cottage House between 1908 and 1913. Many short-term owners followed his occupancy, including Richard F. Culvin from 1914-1915, Joseph La Chance from 1916-1918, R. Badenoch (who worked at the America Can Company) in 1919, Peter Hughes from 1920-1921, and William Rice in 1922. Thomas McEwan, who worked as a longshoreman, lived at this house between 1923 and 1932. Between 1936 and 1943, fisherman Vinco and his wife Annie Kirincic lived here together; Annie for an additional three years after her husband had died.
