Description
Built in 1894 as part of the early European development of Mount Pleasant, this 2-storey house is an example of the Queen Anne style cottage with its wooden gable fretwork, drop siding, and front-facing porch. The building is considered to be one of the earliest surviving examples of its kind along with its easterly neighbour, the other half of its cluster, which shares this heritage style façade. The original owners were Isaac Mills, a clerk at a shoe retailer in Gastown, and his wife Edith Donohoe. Nearly a century after its build, in 1980, the Davis family privately funded the restoration of several heritage houses on the West 10th Avenue 100 block. As a result of the Davis family’s efforts, six buildings on the block were successfully added to the city’s Heritage Register, including 117 West 10th Avenue.
