Maxine MacGilvray commissioned this Mission Revival style building as the home of Maxine’s Beauty School. Designed by Thomas B. McArravy and Ross Lort, its distinctive facade, with gothic arches, parapet, and rounded windows and entry, was retained when the building was redeveloped in 2013. The building currently is home to JJ Bean Coffee Roasters.

1209 Bidwell Avenue was a stop on Vancouver Heritage Foundation’s 2018 West End Heritage Tour.
