Description
1312 W 57th (originally 7349 Hudson St) was built for Duncan and Mary Bell-Irving, and designed by renowned architecture firm Sharp and Thompson, costing an impressive $10,000 to build. Duncan Bell-Irving, a member of one of Vancouver’s wealthiest families, was a decorated WWI and WWII veteran, and vice president of the family’s insurance and packing companies.
The building permit describes 1312 W 57th as having a Colonial design, three fireplaces, and being 40 feet by 44 feet and two stories. The house’s symmetrical two-storey layout, hipped roof with small dormers, and impressive front entry with columns and balustraded deck above are all Georgian Revival features.
The windows with wooden muntin bars is are also Georgian Revival style, while the cedar shingle siding is more typical of Arts and Crafts.
