Description
Originally built around 1899-1901 and moved two times over the years, 1350 Graveley Street is valued as the oldest existing house in the Grandview-Woodland neighbourhood.
Built by Thomas Wheeling at 1200 East 1st Avenue, on the eastern shore of False Creek before the waterway was filled for railway yards, the Wheelings moved the house to 1726 Clark Drive in 1937 to make way for the First Avenue Viaduct. A basement was added at this time. In 1955, due to Clark Drive’s evolution into a major truck route, then-owner Mike Shewchuk moved it yet again to its current location. The Calogero family have owned and carefully maintained the house since the mid-1970s.
The house has a gabled vernacular form and massing, and a gabled front entry porch.
1350 Graveley Street exemplifies the early development influences and evolution of the area bordering False Creek flats, associated with transportation, and its cultural association with early and post-World War II immigration.
On July 22, 2017, the Grandview Heritage Group unveiled a plaque the house. The house was added to the Vancouver Heritage Register as a B-listing in 2019.
