Description
The Reifel Residence, located in the First Shaughnessy neighbourhood of Vancouver, is a large, wood-frame British Arts and Crafts style house. Two and one-half storeys in height, the residence is an elegant building, characterized by its large full-height front-gabled projecting bay, its distinctive brick chimneys, and its half-timbering detailing. The design of the house adheres strictly to the principles of British Arts and Crafts architecture.
Together with the adjacent estate houses in the neighbourhood, the Reifel Residence, designed for one of Vancouver’s most prestigious families, is an important part of the historic streetscape. In 1922, Heinrich “Henry” Reifel (1869-1945), family patriarch and brew-master, and his wife Annie Elizabeth (1863-1936), moved into this house, which was designed for the couple by the architectural partnership of Mackenzie & Bow.
The Reifel Residence is valued for its connection to the prominent Reifel family, its placement among the early and notable residences of Vancouver’s privileged First Shaughnessy neighbourhood, and its decorative, British Arts and Crafts design.
