Description

The Waldorf Hotel is a white Streamline Moderne building built in 1947/1948. It was designed by Mercer & Mercer architects. The hotel is best known for its “Tahitian Cocktail Lounge.” The bar was built in 1954/1955 by Mercer and , and centres around a descending spiral staircase. One of the oldest surviving Polynesian Tiki rooms in Western Canada, the bar was built at a time of a craze for all thing Hawaiian and Polynesian: It features a midnight blue half-domed ceiling, fake palm trees, bamboo matting. The building was restored in 2010 by Scott Cohen Architects. The building was sold to a developer in 2013. The ensuing campaign to ‘Save the Waldorf’ garnered 19,000 signatures.
