Description
Built in 1912/13 by Alfred and Joseph Townsend with red brick (currently painted over) with bay windows and cornice. It was previously the Wicklow Hotel, and is today a long-stay, low-income residential hotel operated by Portland Housing Society.
Townsend and Townsend were active in Vancouver from 1909-1913, both born in London, England and used an eclectic blend of Queen Anne and Edwardian features in their designs for some of Vancouver’s first multi-storey apartment blocks. According to Ross Lort ” [they were] two men of the same name, presumably brothers, arrived from the United States and set up office on the second floor of a building down on Hastings Street”. They are well known for Quebec Manor (previously Mount Stephen Apartments) at 101 E 7th Ave in Mt Pleasant.
