Description
1590 W 15th Avenue is Tudor Revival style apartment building, called the Mount Royal Apartments, designed by Gardiner and Mercer in 1927.
Mercer and Gardiner are also responsible for many of the original industrial buildings at Granville Island, Vancouver’s first Jewish Community Centre at 2675 Oak St as well as many other institutional and residential buildings. Across the street from the Mount Royal are five other heritage three-storey walk-up apartments.
The Mount Royal is fairly large for the time, built with 18 units. 1590 W 15th Ave recalls a Tudor Revival style mansion with its hipped roof, half timbering and stucco upper stories, projecting gabled bays, and brick veneer lower floor. The tudor arch over the doorway, and leaded stained glass feature windows are other Tudor Revival style characteristics.
