Description

This complex houses Canada’s most historic steam locomotive, CPR Engine 374. It pulled the first transcontinental passenger train into Vancouver in 1887, the year the railway was completed and construction was started on the Roundhouse. The railroad was the catalyst to growth: in just three years Vancouver’s population increased over 10 times.

The Roundhouse, its turntable and Machine Shop were all completed in 1888 — they are among the oldest industrial structures in the city. The surrounding neighbourhood of Yaletown developed after CPR workers moved their old construction camp buildings here from Yale in the Fraser Canyon. In the early 1980s concerned citizens saved the Roundhouse from demolition. After Expo 86 it was creatively restored to become Yaletown’s community centre, and expanded to house Engine 374.
