Description
Built in 1912 by W.G. Hooper, this house was first home to Wellington Miller, a builder’s supplier, from 1914-1924. According to the Vancouver City Directories, Eustace H Grubbe, Branch Manager for the Bank of Montreal and his wife M Bertha then lived in the home from 1924 to 1944. By the early 1940s, the house had been converted into four suites and was being used as a rooming house, a layout which the home retains today.
The house was designed by N.J. Gross in the Craftsman style, which is the American Arts & Crafts Style mostly identified with Southern California that arrived in Vancouver between 1908 and 1910. The craftsman style is best exemplified by a mix of materials, including stone, siding, and stucco, half-timbering in the gable, and prominent brackets and rafter tails.
For its centennial anniversary in 2012, the house underwent a full re-paint with the assistance of a Vancouver Heritage Foundation True Colours Grant and was featured in the 2022 Heritage House Tour Online.
