Description
1875 Tolmie Street was built for Claude S. Thicke and his wife Sue in 1922. The architect was Robert Wilson who worked for many years for architect Thomas Hooper. Wilson is known for designing several residences in Point Grey as well as commercial buildings.
The builder, John Galloway, also built the first Royal Vancouver Yacht Club building, an organization that Thicke was actively involved in for many years. Thicke was born in Vancouver and married Sue Mutch a year before their house was built, and it was their family home past 1955.
Claude Thicke worked for the CPR, served in the Canadian Navy during WWI, owned a tugboat business, and started a towing company. The Craftsman Bungalow style features of 1875 Tolmie St can be seen in the deep full-width covered porch, asymmetry and offset entry, roof overhang with half timber dividers on front gable, and shingle siding.
