Description

The building known today as “The Cultch” was constructed in 1909 as the Grandview Methodist Church.
In 1968, the church was handed over to Inner City Services and spent 5 years as a shared space between the Vancouver Free University and storefront lawyers. In 1973, the building became the Vancouver East Cultural Centre.

“The Cultch” was home to the Tamahouse Theatre Workshop from 1971-1995. Known for its emphasis on experimental theatre and collective creation, the company won numerous awards, toured internationally, and in 1978 launched John Gray’s musical “Billy Bishop Goes to War.” The Cultch continues the tradition of successful, innovative theatre, dance and music in this revitalized heritage building. In 2019 the Cultch celebrated its 45th Anniversary.

The Cultch is recognized as one of VHF’s Places that Matter: https://www.heritagesitefinder.ca/place-that-matters/vancouver-free-university/
