Description

The First Church of Christ, Scientist Vancouver operated since 1919 at 1160 Georgia Street until it was sold to Coastal Church in 2002. The Second Church of Christ, Scientist Vancouver at 1900 W. 12th Avenue dates from 1926.

Mary Baker Eddy (1821–1910) was an influential American author, teacher, and religious leader, noted for her groundbreaking ideas about spirituality and health, which she named Christian Science. First published in 1875, her best-seller Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, is used today as the textbook of the Christian Science religion. Four years later she founded the Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts, the world headquarters of Christian Science, which today has branch churches and societies around the world.

The church was designed by Perry and Kerr (a partnership that only existed in 1926). Welsh architect Richard Thomas Perry moved to Vancouver in 1907 at the age of 23, and was active for 25 years, even opening an office in Calgary, until the crash of 1929. His career in Vancouver included downtown hotels, apartments around the city, private residences, churches, armouries and drill halls, and a monument for WWI Returned Soldiers at Mountain View Cemetery. Perry served with the Canadian Army in WWI. He returned to England in 1935 and so far no references to his work there have yet been found.
