Description

1940 Arbutus Street was originally known as 2091-2095 West 4th Avenue. 2091 West 4th Avenue was built in 1911 by D.A. Acorn, and designed by Thornton & Jones. Described on the permit as brick store and apartments

2091 West 4th Avenue first appears in directories in 1912, listed as vacant. In 1913-1914, 2091 is listed as a grocery belonging to Henry J. Scrivener, while 2093 is listed as Vancouver Drug Co. In 1915, 2091 became Galloway and Gargett grocery. In 1918, Herold & Co. took over 2093 West 4th Avenue.

A variety of grocery and drug stores have taken residence in the building since its construction. Today it hosts a coffee shop, and a Roots.
