Description

Queen Mary Elementary School was built in several stages. Originally named West Point Grey, the school was renamed to Queen Mary in 1915. The oldest Collegiate Gothic style structure is a brick-clad building with a tall central monitor and grand front entrance, opened in 1914 and designed by Twizell & Twizell. A poured-in-place reinforced-concrete addition was built from 1926-30. The gymnasium/auditorium was designed by Alan W. Gray and built in 1954. A four-classroom addition was built in 1964.

Also on the site and a part of the historic place is a one-storey wooden structure designed with Craftsman features; its history is uncertain, though likely served as a workshop for manual training.

Queen Mary Elementary School underwent seismic upgrades in 2017. The project retained heritage features, and included a partial replacement of the school and upgrading of original 1914 red brick building. Additions were also created to replace other buildings that had been on the site.
