Description
St. Augustine’s Church is located on the parish of the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate in the neighbourhood of Kitsilano. This building of Gothic revival style was built in 1931 to serve the growing community then and was designed by architects Twizzle and Twizzle.
The church received an extension in 1998 when an adjacent parish centre was added to the church to serve the missionary’s administrative purposes. The design of the parish centre, although classified as postmodern, complemented that of the church with its use of bricks.
The distinct interior of the church has attracted the production industry to use the site as its set – with one of them being the T.V. show The X-Files in the late 1990s. When the city council requested that the parish undergo a rezoning process, the church obliged in exchange for a designation of the church as a heritage site.
