Description
Built in 1912, 2033 Ferndale Street is a mirror version of the house beside it, 2037 Ferndale. Both houses have covered half-porches, and bay windows. Due to a change in street name, the building permit has the house listed under 2034 E Pender Street. The building permit states that both houses were designed by W.A.S. Richards, and constructed in 1909 by F.H. Holt, for W. Aconley.
William Austin Swain Richards (1878-1973) was born in Southport, England, and trained in architecture in Liverpool before immigrating to and practicing in Vancouver. He designed two chapels in 1908 for the Vancouver cemetery, as well as a commercial block of Robson Street in 1910, which no longer exists.
Ferndale street was previously a part of Keefer Street until it was renamed in 1929. Keefer Street was named after George Alexander Keefer who worked as a surveyor for the Canadian Pacific Railway, before opening a private engineering business.
