Description
This large estate home was named for its owners, Willard and Mary Kitchen. Mr. Kitchen was a director of the Pacific Great Eastern Railway (now BC Rail). The Kitchens commissioned James A. Benzie and William Bow in 1924 to design the 9,000-square-foot Tudor Revival style house.
The architects used local materials such as patterned brickwork and interior panelling in exotic wood. A coach house was also built alongside to accommodate their car and chauffeur. Three generations of the Kitchen family resided at WilMar until Judith Jardine’s death in 2006. The Kitchens had originally purchased the land for $40,000, and their house was finally listed for sale at $8.5 million.
WilMar got a new owner in 2015, who plans restore it as a duplex and build five single-family homes on the property. It is still under construction as of 2024.
This property was a stop on the 2016 Heritage House Tour.
