Description
Built in 1942 as the Cemco Electrical Manufacturing Company Factory, this building was commissioned to house Cemco’s expanding electronic business which supplied equipment for shipyards as well as for the public. The factory at 22nd East 5th Avenue was designed by H.H. Simmonds, and used pour-in-place construction the retained the marks of the formwork. Cemco began operating in 1934 at 165 West 4th Avenue. In 1958, the Federal Pacific Electric Company of Neward New Jersey acquired Cemco. Until recently, the building was occupied by N. Jefferson Ltd., a family owned textile supplier which has been operating since 1926 and continues to do so at a new location. There are currently plans to build ‘The Lightworks Building’, a concrete and glass landmark rising from the original heritage building, that will house retail and office spaces.
