Description
This 1912 two-storey Vancouver vernacular was built by Island Investment Co Ltd and architect W.R. Kay along with 2232 Stephens Street. Its first listed occupant in 1913 is Alex P. Chenette.
The Vancouver Craftsman homes along 2200 Stephens Street make up a heritage streetscape in the Kitsilano neighbourhood. Most of the homes on the block which are currently on the Vancouver Heritage Register were built by Bentley & Wear, Canada West Development and Island Investment Co. from 1912-1914. Over 30 homes are on the register from the blocks between 1600-2400 Stephens Street.
The block was originally built for working class families, utilizing Craftsman architecture. The house as 2228 Stephens St has been well maintained by the current owner, who previously replaced the roof, retained the exterior wood shingles, exposed and refinished the oak floors, and had insulation installed. With the assistance of a VHF Restore It grant, the windows were restored in 2013, preserving the original 1912 windows.
