Description
Begun in 1914 and constructed in a Classical Revival style, the brick-clad school was designed to the popular ‘barbell’ plan, with two classroom wings flanking the central core. The south wing was built in 1929, the year of Point Grey’s annexation with the City of Vancouver, and reflects the need for space for incoming students. The initial portion was designed by either N.A. Leech or C.W. Egan, and the 1929 wing by H.W. Postle. The open area teaching space, created in 1971-72, coincides with changing concepts in pedagogy. Due to the seismic risk facing the structure, Bayview Elementary has been identified for full replacement. The school is currently closed and is awaiting demolition. A community celebration was held in the summer of 2019 to commemorate the legacy of the school, take photos, and share stories from Bayview over the years. “In the early 80’s the school was more like Kits Community Centre combined with school. The church across the street was the preschool. Courses were held after school. I took tai chi from a recent Vietnamese immigrant. The community moms taught cooking to families newly arrived and with the help of an ESL teacher they made a cookbook. Some carpenter parents helped others make basement suites to families had a place to live”. -Former Teacher
