Description
The firm of Nixon and Wright designed and built both the Hay House and the house next door to the west (2335 West 7th Avenue) in 1909. The Hay House is an example of the influence of the Arts and Crafts style in Kitsilano, as seen in its rational space planning, the use of natural materials, and a mix of traditional design elements. The Hay House remains largely intact and retains a great deal of its original integrity. Since the Hay House and the heritage St. George Greek Orthodox Church united to become the Kitsilano Neighbourhood House in 1972, the complex has been a centre of Kitsilano community activities. The Hay House represents the Kitsilano Neighbourhood House, is a familiar local landmark and is compatible with the surrounding residential streetscape.
