Description

This 1912 Neoclassical Revival building was designed by Thomas Hooper, an English born architect who lived in Victoria but practiced in Vancouver from 1908-1913. His architectural style was influenced by Romanesque Revival, Beaux Arts Classical and Second Empire styles. He designed this building specifically for the Royal Bank of Canada (RBC).

The glazed terra cotta façade was built offsite and then assembled using a numbered legend. The shorter building at 2245 Main was home to several grocery and meat stores, including Calladine’s Grocery in 1918 and Safeway in the late 1920s-early ’30s. RBC occupied 2349 Main from 1914-1973.

After renovations, the two buildings became home to the Goh Ballet Academy in 1985.
