Description
Along with 2524, 2533 and 2537, 2543 Balaclava Street was built in 1912 by Vernon Bros., Ltd. The house first appears in city directories in 1913, with a Mrs. CE Van Horne listed as the resident. From 1914 until 1926 George Van Horne (of Senkler Spink & Van Horne, and later Senkler Buell & Van Horne) is listed as the main resident. George died ~1926-1927, and his widow Evelyn left the house before 1928.
Later residents included a reverend, a clerk for the Bank of Toronto, a carpenter, an accountant, and a coffee shop proprietor. The house is an example of the Craftsman style, though unique with the double front-gabled roof.
