Description
This Edwardian house with Queen Anne elements was designed by American architects Townsend and Townsend. The house itself was built by James Bruce Arthur who was an active contractor in Mount Pleasant at the time. It has a wood frame structure with sandstone granite, buff brick and wood facing; the granite fence and gate posts are original. The building exterior has a wraparound verandah, bay windows, wood brackets and shingled dormers on the 3rd floor. Inside there is extensive mahogany oak paneling and stained glass. The distinctive deck on the rooftop, known as a “widow’s walk,” is accessible from a trap door from the once-billiards room.
In 1928, William T. Brookes purchased the home and converted it the Strathcona House Apartments with four apartments and four housekeeping suites. In 1944 it became a nursing home (Strathcona Private Hospital), but in 1973 it was turned back into rental apartments which is how it remains.
