Description
The building at 2655 Maple Street was built in 1929 by Frank Hayes for his construction company: F. Hayes & Co. It remains one of the last surviving commercial and industrial building associated with the early development of the Arbutus corridor.
The F. Haynes & Co. Building was built in the Kitsilano/Arbutus Ridge area. It is located behind the Bessborough Armoury (1932-1934), and faces the Lord Tennyson Elementary School (1909/1910). The modest building was designed in the Mission Style. In later years, an addition was constructed at the rear, as well as a concrete addition on the left side.
While the downstairs portion was used for the construction company, Frank Hayes and his wife Hilda resided in the upstairs apartment until the late 1940s. Plans for future purposes include turning the building into artists’ studios, and the realizing of an apartment building to replace the later addition of the heritage building.
