Description
This Dargavel & Kilgour house is a surviving example of the 1920s working class variation of the Craftsman Bungalow, an architectural style that trended in Vancouver from 1910 to the 1930s. It’s a one and a half storey, modestly-scaled variation, with a horizontal emphasis that has a mixture of finishing materials and surfaces. The home’s characterizing jerkin-headed roof was common for this design, giving a more cottage-like feel to the house as per the tastes of the era.
The building’s contextual value lies in its orientation among a grouping of surviving one and a half storey bungalows on this block from the same period, including the two adjacent to the east (2755 and 2745 W 8th) constructed by the same builders – William Herbert Dargavel (1884-1967) & John Byron Kilgour (1862-1947). These Kitsilano specialist builders developed at least five of the homes on this block between 1922 and 1923.
In 1924, an EP McDiarmid is listed as its occupant.
