Description
According to VanMap, the current building dates from 1971. The earliest city listing is for 1916, showing that 278 E Pender was occupied by a Chinese produce company. It also shows a building has been at this site since 1912 or before. In the late 1930s, it became a meat and produce shop while 278B appears as “cabins” occupied by Chinese tenants. Today the building is occupied by a Chinese herbal shop called Continental Herbal Company.
This site is part of the Chinatown Historic Area, HA-1 in the City of Vancouver’s zoning bylaw. It is included in the Vancouver Heritage Register as a recognized part of the historic neighbourhood. Other similar municipally protected sites within a Historic Area are marked on the map with an O instead of the usual Heritage Register categories of A, B, or C. Some of these sites may be newer construction but are nonetheless still protected.
