Description
Built in 1910 by J.G. Scott, and owned and designed by W. Ellis, it first appears in city directories as 2860 West 1st Avenue in 1912, with the first resident listed as William G. Gillett. Gillett was a contractor and carpenter. William died sometime between 1918 and 1921, leaving the house to his widow, Beatrice. Beatrice Gillett stayed at the house until 1922.
In 1923, the resident is listed as Copp- with Soldier Settlement Bd. This would be Eustace H. Cope, an adjuster with Solider Settlement Bd. In 1926, Eustace is listed as working in sales at A.E. Short. Eustace left the house in 1927.
From 1934-1939, Mary Stevens lived at the house alone. Her sister, Kathleen (a music teacher) lived in the house with Mary from 1935-1951. Mary appears to have left the house in 1951, and Kathleen left by 1953.
Other residents of the house included a physician, a manager of Canadian General Electric, and an engineer.
The building permit lists the address as 2860/2830 West 1st Ave/Marine Drive. The address changed from 2860 West 1st to 2830 West 1st in directories in 1931.
