Description
This four-storey building was constructed in 1911 for Leon Way and Company and designed by Edward Evans Blackmore and Samuel Buttrey Birds. Blackmore & Birds constructed other pre-1912 buildings in Vancouver.
Its corner locations combines retail on the ground floor with apartments above and was an example of Chinatown’s extension east of Main Street in the pre-WWI period.
Today it houses Arno Rooms upstairs and one of Chinatown’s largest remaining fruit and vegetable stores, Jiamei Market on the full ground floor. Throughout the years, the tenants on the ground floor retail shops have also included a tailor, barber, and other grocery stores.
