Description
Built in 1911 by Carmichael and Herbert at the same time as 2926 West 3rd Avenue, 2922 West 3rd first appears in directories in 1914, with Dougal Carmichael, a clerk with Inland Revenue, listed as the first resident of the house. ,
Like most of the Vancouver Craftsman homes of this period, there is a staircase that leads to a large front porch and main floor of the house. The porch provided much needed outdoor space away from the dust of the street and was important because interior lighting was limited.
There is also a traditional sleeping porch with curved exterior walls on the upper story of the house. This house is unique because it has large dormers extending the length of the upper floor. This design is found in another property two blocks down the street, but it is difficult to tell if this was an addition or an original design feature. The unique brackets on the upper floor differ from many homes of the period and the roof gables are closed which was uncommon at the time, but provide a unique feature to this house.
In 1923 E. Ivan Barbour made the house his home. He was an inside salesman with the insurance firm Ceperly Rounsefell & Co. and stayed at the address until 1949.
