Description
This Craftsman house was built in 1914 for E.D. Rorke, Foreman, BC Saturday Sunset newspaper. The house was originally situated on four lots and surrounded by an orchard. The short-lived architecture firm Doctor, Stewart & Davie designed the house.
Doctor, Stewart & Davie was opened in 1913 by William Alexander Doctor, with W.F.T Steward and Hugh S. Davie. Their partnership ran until 1918. As a collective, they designed extensive interior alterations to the existing First Church of Christ Scientist on Georgia Street, as well as created a competition winning design for the Vancouver Police Headquarters of East Cordova Street at Gore Avenue.
Specific Craftsman details at 2925 W 38th avenue include: low pitched-roof line, broad entry porch framed by heavy columns, front sleeping porch with entry from all upper floor bedrooms, exposed rafter tails, casement windows with leaded transoms, and wide eaves. The house retains its original floor plan, though a connection between the kitchen and dining room has been altered.
The house was a stop on VHF’s 2012 Heritage House Tour.
