Description
The former Labour Temple opened in 1949. It was a home for labour organizations, such as the Labour Congress of Canada. In the 1970s, labour organizations began to move out. Medical professional offices moved in. The building housed the Forensic Psychiatric Outpatients Clinic that served the nearby hospital.
The nouveau-modernist stone relief depicts plants, birds, airplanes and workers. The relief was designed by Vancouver artist Beatrice Lennie, who was one of the few Canadian women working with sculpture in the 1930s and 1940s.
Lennie studied at the Vancouver School of Art and Design under F. H. Varley and Jock McDonald. After continuing her studies in California, she returned to B.C. in 1934 where she served as the head of sculpture at the short-lived B.C. College of Art.
Lennie’s other significant works include the bronze friezes on the Pattulo Bridge (1937) and at the Federal Building at Sinclair Centre (1938).
