Description

The Arlington Building is a three-storey late Victorian Italianate commercial structure built in 1887. The building was first owned by Dr. James Whetham. The design is attributed to Noble Stonestreet Hoffar. Prominent architects like Hoffar designed many of Vancouver’s early commercial buildings.

At the time it was built, this part of town was the prime commercial and shopping area. The Arlington Building accommodated travelers and businessmen, seasonal workers, as well as more permanent residents.

The building was later known as the Simcoe Rooming House and the Arlington Rooms. By the early 1960s, this building, like many of its neighbours, had deteriorated badly and was forced to close. In the mid-1960s, property owners in Gastown area conducted a painting campaign, instilling new life into the Arlington and surrounding buildings.
