Description

Situated on the edge of the original Granville Townsite, the Panama Block replaced earlier wooden structures, and was named to acknowledge the anticipated building of the Panama Canal. For Vancouver, the building of the canal signified making the city an important world port serving both Europe and the Orient.

Built in 1913 for McConnell, Abbott & Drayton, it was designed by architects Wallington & Wheatley. It is a triangular building due to the streets west of here being aligned in a different direction, creating oddly shaped lots.

One of the longest tenants in the building was Israel Baumgart, a tailor. Today the building continues to be occupied by commercial and retail businesses.
