Description
The J.W. Horne Block is a three storey plus lower level masonry Victorian Italianate residential building constructed in 1889. J.W. Horne was a prominent entrepreneur and politician, and the largest private land owner in the city.
This building was designed by Noble Stonestreet Hoffar (1843-1907). One of Vancouver’s first architects, Hoffar made a considerable contribution to the evolution of the city in the period between 1886 and the mid 1890s with his design and construction of many of the city’s largest and most substantial Victorian Italianate structures.
Despite a missing tower and cornice, this building remains one of the very best examples of the Victorian Italianate style surviving from early Vancouver.
