Description
The house at 315 West 11th Avenue was built in 1921 by Carl A. Doerffler. This one-and-a-half storey house illustrates the transformation of Mount Pleasant after the Edwardian style building development (1905-1913), and the simple style of the lean years after the First World War.
Carl Doerffler worked as an accountant at the Pacific Coast Pipe Company. He resided at 315 West 11th Avenue with his wife Helen until 1930/1931. Thereafter, the house owners changed frequently over the years. The Doerffler House is located between Yukon Street and Alberta Street. Many of the streets in Mount Pleasant were named after the Canadian provinces, or its inhabitants’ backgrounds, originally coming from other places in Canada, England, Scotland, and Ireland.
The Doerffler House still features multiple Craftsman details, such as shingle cladding, trim boards, ornamental eave brackets, multi-paned wood sash windows (some with leaded glass), and a large verandah. The Vancouver Green paint colour of the house is also a distinguishable element of the Craftsman style.
