Description

Built in 1912, this two-storey plus lower level masonry commercial arcade building is an early shopping arcade building, and the only such arcade constructed in Gastown.

Designed by Stuart & White (the partnership of Bertram Dudley Stuart and Howard E. White) the covered passage, with shops on both sides, served the bustling community with commercial and retail services.

Its unique location allowed frontage on two sides that was joined by an internal walkway that connected Water, W Cordova and Homer Streets.

In the 1980s the Arcade was rehabilitated as ‘Le Magasin’. The sensitive rehabilitation retained original features of the internal passageway, including its elaborate pressed tin ceiling.
