Description

The Carleton School campus reflects the population growth pre-WWI in South Vancouver. The first structure, begun in 1896, is the only surviving one room schoolhouse in the city. It reveals the vernacular style used in early neighbourhood buildings. The second building was completed in 1907 and is the earliest two room school. This was outgrown by 1908, wherein a larger yellow wood building designed by W.T. Whiteway was built. This too was outgrown; by 1911 a brick building was added to the campus.

You can learn more about the adaptive re-use of Carleton Hall schoolhouse, one of VHF's Sustainability and Heritage Case Studies.
