Description
The West Residence is one of Shaughnessy's landmark homes. Built on Granville Street, it is a prominent part of the historic district. Shaughnessy Heights was started in 1909 as an exclusive subdivision by the Canadian Pacific Railway Company.
Built by John and Margaret West in 1912, this house was designed by the architects Grant, Henderson & Cook in the Mission Revival style. The Mission Revival style is fairly rare in Vancouver, but it really originates in California where the old missions of Spanish California were the inspiration for a new generation of architects to be inspired during the Arts and Crafts era. Mission Revival style can be seen in the old clay tiles of the roof parapets with fanciful designs and the stucco exterior.
This mansion has survived in the Shaughnessy district largely because there was a decision made to stratify this home in the 1980s. There are four units on the property all together - three in the main house and then one that includes the coach house at the rear of the house.
This house was featured in the 2021 Heritage House Tour Online.
