Description
This Edwardian-era three-storey masonry commercial building was one of the earliest projects by architect William F. Gardiner.
Built in 1908 by Atkinson & Dill for the British Columbia Permanent Loan and Savings Company, each floor served a different purpose. The street level provided retail space, the second floor was office space, and the top level was residential and also provided an interior connection to the Victoria House located next door on Homer Street.
The Victoria Block contributes to the development of the Victory Square area as the commercial and retail centre of downtown Vancouver during the early period of the twentieth century. The local School Board, accounting, brokerage, financial services, and numerous real estate offices originally occupied the building.
After years of neglect, a recent restoration has revitalized the building’s features, and continues to serve as mixed commercial and residential uses. A hotel, restaurants and shops occupy the space which has been recently renovated.
