Description
The Park Theatre opened in 1941, and was one of many small neighbourhood theatres built in the 1930s and 40s. It was designed by Kaplan and Sprachman, who designed many theatres across Canada, including the Vogue, Varsity and Ridge theatres in Vancouver.
The theatre was originally owned by Odeon, and changed hands many times before becoming part of Famous Players. In spring 2005, Famous Players shut down the Park and it stayed empty until Leonard Schein leased the building and updated the interior before reopening it. In 2013, the Park was bought by Cineplex, and since 2016, the Park no longer plays first run movies and instead is an “event cinema” space.
Single screen theatres like the Park are significant in Vancouver’s cultural history, and are venues that continue to bring neighborhoods together. Other small historic theatres still standing in Vancouver include the Stanley and Hollywood, both of which were once slated for demolition but saved by public campaigns.
