Description
This Georgian Revival style house was built in 1913 for William C. Ditmars, and it was designed by prominent architects Twizell & Twizell as part of the first development of the area. Ditmars was the secretary and treasurer of Armstrong and Morrison Co., public works contractors, who built the old Cambie Bridge and other bridges in the province, and he later became the company’s president.
Pre-war Georgian Revival houses are rare in Vancouver, most having been built in the inter-war period. This is the only Shaughnessy Georgian house with brick siding, as most Georgian houses have stucco or lap siding. Typical of Georgian Revival style houses, 3637 Pine Crescent is nearly symmetrical, except for a sun porch on one side, and has classical detailing. Its windows are in pairs and vertical, with muntin bars, classical keystone details above, and flanked with shutters. The front door is prominent, with a portico and small ballustraded porch above. The roof’s three dormers are more elaborate than most Georgian Revival style houses, which are two storeys with a hipped roof. Some updates were done to the house in the late 1990s.
